The Health Hive is a community-rooted medical literacy program. We help immigrants navigate California's healthcare system, and we help healthcare providers understand the cultures of the patients they serve — so that care is clear, respectful, and reachable for everyone.
Our story
California is home to more than 10.9 million immigrants, many of whom face unique obstacles when seeking healthcare. California's healthcare system can be difficult to navigate even for lifelong residents, and immigrants often encounter additional barriers — language, culture, and unfamiliar systems — that can limit access to timely and appropriate care.
The Health Hive was created to address this challenge directly. We provide a multilingual digital platform that supports patients in navigating the healthcare system, offers plain-language health guides in multiple languages, and equips healthcare providers with cultural competency resources to strengthen communication and patient care.
We believe guidance is most effective when it comes from within the community. That's why community health workers — people who share language, experience, and trust with the communities they serve — are at the heart of everything we do.

A new country's healthcare system can feel impossible to navigate, and a provider can't care well for someone whose world they don't understand. The Health Hive closes both gaps — with plain language, cultural humility, and trust built inside the community.
Accessing healthcare in California can be overwhelming, particularly for individuals and families who are adjusting to life in a new country. Language barriers, unfamiliar medical terminology, and cultural differences can make it difficult for immigrants to understand healthcare services, communicate with providers, and make informed decisions about their health.
Our Medical Literacy Program is dedicated to helping immigrants overcome these challenges by providing the knowledge, resources, and support needed to navigate California's healthcare system with confidence. Through culturally responsive education and practical guidance, participants learn how to access medical services, understand health information, schedule appointments, use health insurance, and advocate for their own healthcare needs.
By improving medical literacy, we empower immigrant communities to take charge of their health, reduce disparities in healthcare access, and build confidence in managing their well-being. Through education and support, we help individuals and families make informed healthcare decisions, leading to healthier lives and stronger communities.
Hi! I'm Eleanore Chu
I'm a junior in high school in Southern California with an interest in science. I'm passionate about making healthcare more understandable to people from all backgrounds. Through this website, I hope to help others feel more informed and confident when navigating California's healthcare system.
I also aim to provide physicians with information about healthcare systems in other countries, allowing them to better understand the background and experiences of their patients. Outside of school, I enjoy dancing and playing with my cat.
